H. L. Leonard Bamboo Fly Rod 10ft. circa 1910
H. L. Leonard Rod 10ft. 3/2, # 3/4 line,( #3 pure silk a real pleasure) circa 1910. A lovely wet/dry fly rod that will protect the finest tippets while easily mending a long line. A classic eastern beauty. Restored here with all original wraps in tact ; no changes made exception being a new cork grip. Perfect Leonard ferrules and all straight and tight . Pleasantly able to be used for today's fishing; it has been lightly used and well taken care of, now ready for another century of work for the experienced, sophisticated fisher. With new non-original bag.
Joe Balestrieri 8ft 6in. Parabolic Pace, ( medium parabolic action) #5/6 line, 2/1 ( made that way). Flamed caramel cane, clear wraps on gloss spar varnish, agate stripper. Staggered ferrule model ( tip 10 inches longer than butt) burl seat with cork insert and uplock ring and cap, modified Ritz grip for precise hand placement, durabronze ferrules ( old stock). Specially built for accurate tracking and line placement, easy mending and roll casting if needed. Purpose built under my name apart from Redwing. A speciality rod of my taper and concept; designed to be a custom piece. With bag and tube.
J. M. Kenyon 10 ft. 2/2 " Silkien" bamboo fly rod, spliced joints. Built in Toledo, Ohio circa 1897, casts a #6 line ( real silk the best). This rod was silk wrapped with white silk thread over the whole shaft ; thought to strengthen the shafts. Label in tact along with the " Silkien" pat. Oct. 26, 1897- and J.M. Kenyon- Maker Toledo , Ohio. Areas of the shaft need to be replaced and re-wrapped but the shafts are sound. I have cast the rod and it has that beautiful old time patience and power both. Any re-wrapping can be accomplished here at Redwing. With wood form case and leather tube. Will almost never be seen again.
Ogdan Smith 9ft. #5/6, " The Duros Rod"
Paul young bamboo casting rod 7ft. 6in. 2/1, 5.5 oz. "Cast - Master", full cork grip with 2 rings with Paul young Detroit stamping. Will cast a lure to 2 ounces; nice for steelhead or bass and pike. Pre-flamed era rod with a nice pumpkin finish and great ferrule fit and varnish.
Hardy 9 1/2 ft. Bamboo Fly Rod, Circa 1899, 3/1, # 4/5 line ( I recommend a real silk line for the guides used at the time), Queen Victoria was still ruling the British Empire. Britian was fighting it's second Boer war in South Africa at this time. How the world was a different place back then! Model " Fairy"; a light weight rod but not whippy as many of the old world rods are. Yes, a wet fly taper but able to punch out larger dry's when required. Shown and left as original; easily fishable. Rarely seen wooden seat , good cork, left with it's acquired dirt from the last 120 years. Take this rod out on a beautiful spring day; wear a tie and sense the slower rhythms this it emits all the time thinking of it's long history.

J. Balestrieri / Redwing Fly Rods, 9 ft. 3/2, #228 Type Garrison, # 6/7 line, 5.6 oz. Salmon , Steelhead. Hand planed, dark shafts, brown impregnated reelseat with ring DL ( very secure and reduces weight), brown/ dark brown wraps, to match the overall dark, quietness of the build. Super "Z" type ferrules ( blued), fixed extension with rubber butt ala Garrison, agate stripper. My work with the Garrison pleasant, confident taper; smooth and easy to cast to 60 ft. plus when required; a joy to roll cast and modified Spey throws as well. Perfect for steelhead and light salmon etc. Built for the coldest weather ( Wisconsin Steelhead season!) and I believe anyone will be pleased at the tapers overall response. With bag and tube.
Dan Brenan 6ft. Bamboo Fly rod, 2/1, #4 line, ( also liked a #5 pure silk), all cork seat with rings and original super "Z" ferrules. Inked " Rod by Brenan" , " Fayetteville N. Y. " Straight and tight with non- original bag? A nice, soft casting piece; perfect Catskill pocket water rod with a good maker history behind it. Note- hook keeper removed for a snake type higher on the butt just a bit. Delightful dry fly rod.
J. Balestrieri / Redwing 8ft. 2/2, Long Taper Parabolic, # 5/6 line, 4 oz., hand planed. My first Long taper Parabolic rod; returned by a great customer, now too old to fish. Golden shafts with resorcinol glue ala Garrison , flared torpedo grip with chestnut seat and cap and ring, Mildsrum stripper and super "Z' type ferrule. Given new wraps and varnish. If i had to go with one line it would be a #5 DT. A fine, soft action ; parabolic in nature for fine tippets and smart trout.
Hardy 9 1/2 ft. Bamboo Fly Rod ( Circa 1899)
Allcocks of Redditch 7ft. 2/1 ( made that way) bamboo Fly Rod. Dry fly model with a pinpoint casting stroke. Early model circa 1930's and rare to find in this size. casts a # 5/6 line; a real #6 silk was was amazing. Capable of long and very close casts due to the parabolic taper . Yes it's a classic older look but all the better when it is actually fished. Straight and tight and excellent ferrule suction. With original bag. Ready for the next 90 years or so; perhaps wear a tie while fishing this piece of history. I'm quite sure that it saw Hawker Hurricanes and Spitfires flying overhead!
REDWING FLY RODS
South Bend # 59 / Redwing Restoration, 9ft. 3/1 ( a second tip can be available) # 6/7 line ( I like a DT #7 best). Casts a beautiful long line with it's faster tip calibrations. Built for bass, light steelhead, large trout and landlocks. Poker straight
shafts are the best grade highly flamed SB made ( some went to Paul Young for Prosperity rods). Once I saw the cane work I had to restore this rod with a beautiful burl seat with cork insert( up lock), Snake brand guides and orange N/S agate stripper; all larger sizes. Tight ferrule fit with classic deep burnt orange silks. Finally this is a rod that is all it can be and cane at a great entry price
J. BALESTRIERI / REDWING FLY RODS 9FT. # 228 TYPE GARRISON
The bamboo is waiting for the wind to touch it! Bamboo Fly rods for sale and repair
Rod is my Pezon Longcast.
P. William ( Bill) Arend bamboo fly rod 9ft. 3/1, # 5/6 line. Most likely a pre -war rod due to the warp color of brown tipped yellow. Very similar to a Goodwin Granger rod in taper and anodized color etc. Bill a lifelong tournament caster until his death in 1952. The rod has that western feel of many Colorado rods, western grip, up lock aluminum seat over black bakelite barrel. All original script is intact, mid section is 1 in. down at the upper ferrule ( doesn't affect casting one bit). One of the least known of the early builders, but a workman of high quality regarding cane selection and taper sequence. I cast a #6 rel silk with an easy delight; rod is excellent at all ranges. I did not clean cork etc. as it is a true heritage piece. Price reflects the notation on the mid section.
Please call to talk about the rod if interested
